Beyond The Games

At 11am on the 11th July, 17 teams made up of WIS and veterans from IGF supporters Amazon and Boeing were joined by Olympians and Welsh sports stars to tee off at Celtic Manor’s Roman Road course at the Invictus Golf Challenge.

Welsh Rugby stars Sir Gareth Edwards CBE, Ellis Jenkins, Colin Charvis, Rhys Priestland and Ian Gough, along with Olympian Jonathan Edwards CBE, Trustee of the Invictus Games Foundation, Olympic sprinter Christian Malcolm, and Snooker champion Mark Williams, all took part in the adaptive Texas Scramble format event to raise awareness of the power of golf in supporting recovery.

"We know when the Invictus community comes together the recovery process is escalated, and it was great to also be joined by the wider Veteran community and a few famous faces! We’ve had incredible support from the Celtic Manor resort, and a fantastic day of golf.”

Mickaela Richards Director of Grants and Programmes at the Invictus Games Foundation

“It was great to once again be part of the Invictus community, this camaraderie is like no other. Playing alongside fellow WIS and Veterans as well as having Sir Gareth Edwards on my team was very special. I’m so grateful to the Invictus Games Foundation for making it happen, anyone out there who wants to join, get on the app and do it!”

As part of the Invictus Games Foundation’s work beyond the Games, travel was funded by the Invictus Games Foundation for the wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veteran community, with all food, accommodation and the golf tournament provided by Celtic Manor.

It was an absolute privilege to have been able to host this very special event, the Invictus Golf Challenge, at the Celtic Manor Resort and support the Invictus Games mission to celebrate the unconquered human spirit of wounded, injured and sick service people from all over the world.

“We know that the great game of golf provides an excellent example of the pathways to recovery offered by sport and it was truly inspiring to hear so many stories of bravery, determination and resilience from the Invictus golfers present on the day.”

Ian Edwards Celtic Manor Resort Chief Executive

The opportunity was provided to attendees via the We Are Invictus app and platform for the community, available from www.weareinvictus.co.uk, open to anyone who has been wounded, injured or fallen ill, during or as a consequence of Service.

Other upcoming golf for recovery opportunities include an On Course Foundation led opportunity in Scotland, UK later this year.
