London, United Kingdom – November 5th – The Invictus Games Foundation is proud to announce the formation of Afghan Unconquered, a team comprised of Afghan wounded injured and sick veterans who have resettled across Australia and the United States following the 2021 Kabul evacuation. These individuals, once trapped in Afghanistan and under threat from the Taliban, will now join competitors from around the world at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 presented by ATCO and Boeing in a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
The story of Afghan Unconquered reflects a journey of hope, survival, and courage in the face of overwhelming adversity. In August 2021, as Afghanistan’s government collapsed, the Afghan competitors, who had been preparing to attend the Invictus Games The Hague 2020, faced immense danger, with some even receiving death threats from the Taliban due to their association with Western military forces. Despite these threats and the chaos surrounding the evacuation, the spirit of the Invictus Games community provided a beacon of hope and support. Through the combined efforts of allies, veterans, and humanitarian organisations, coordinated by the Invictus Games Foundation, these competitors, some with family members also, were evacuated to safety, allowing them to rebuild their lives abroad.
Dominic Reid OBE, CEO of the Invictus Games Foundation, said “The journey to this team’s participation at an Invictus Games has been an extraordinary one, and I’m extremely proud of the role our small team played in ensuring the safety of those we were able to assist. I’m excited to get to meet the team in person next year, for them to finally have their Invictus moment on the world’s stage.”
Now known as Afghan Unconquered, these veterans represent the Foundation’s values of determination, unity, and recovery through sports. Their participation in the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will be a powerful testament to their resilience and a celebration of their unwavering spirit. Their journey from Kabul to the Invictus Games highlights the enduring bonds of friendship and solidarity that the Invictus Community fosters among veterans globally.
As the team prepare to join competitors from other nations, the Invictus Games Foundation reaffirms its commitment to the recovery and rehabilitation of all wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans, regardless of nationality.
